3 Saltwater Tackle Mistakes To Avoid (2026 Update)

We’ve made some expensive mistakes over the years.
The kind that feel smart in the moment… until a big fish makes one hard run and your line snaps.
Or the kind where you spend a few hundred dollars upgrading your setup, expecting better results, and somehow start catching fewer fish instead of more.
Here’s the surprising part: we’ve talked about these before… and we still see them costing anglers time and money.
That’s what makes them easy to do.
They don’t look like mistakes.
They sound logical.
And they’re marketed well.
If you’re serious about catching more fish in 2026, this will save you time, money, and a few heartbreaks.
Featured Gear
- Rod 1: Slot Machine Medium
- Rod 2: Slam Stick Medium
- Rod 3: Slam Stick Traveler
- Reel: Otis 2500
- Lure 1: Polk County Tweaker
- Lure 2: Prawn USA Junior
Key Takeaways
- One popular reel spec sounds impressive… but might actually be costing you big fish.
- The piece of gear most anglers obsess over is not the one that improves casting distance or sensitivity.
- There’s a simple spending flip that changes performance immediately.
- Your “confidence lure” could be quietly limiting you during certain seasons.
- Small adjustments in winter can completely change how fish react to your presentation.
Final Thoughts
None of these mistakes feel obvious when you’re making them.
They sound logical. They’re marketed well. And most anglers don’t realize there’s a better approach until something breaks, snaps, or simply stops producing.
Before you buy your next reel, upgrade your setup, or tie on your go-to lure, it’s worth taking a few minutes to rethink the fundamentals.
Which one do you think is costing anglers the most right now?

Really good thoughts guys, my customers have had good success the last week, we have finally started to catch Redfish and Trout in the shallow water in Charleston SC. The water temps have been under 50 degrees and have warmed up in the shallows mid day. Difficult January and February, thank goodness for Sheepshead. Russ @ Kayak Fishing Charleston.
Good info guys. Thanks
Enjoyed the podcast. Thank you
I’m glad to hear about the rod selection information you shared. After I first set up the slam stick combo I ordered, I made probably my furthest casts ever and effortlessly. That’s a great combo. Unfortunately now I’m going to have to get back on the tackle site to order that slot machine combo 😅
As far as drag goes for me i have no idea of how much piundage I use it just adjust it so I know from experience that a fish will still be able to pull line and yet not to tight that the fish will break off and or to loose where its hard setting the hook where need be and as far as reels I stick with what has worked for me ever since I began inshore saltwater fishing shimano masci 3000 size spinning reels on a tournament inshore series 7 ft 6 inch st croix rods with 20 lb power pro and a 20lb either berkley invisoline flouro or berkley extra tough mono leader baitcasting a 150 size shimano tran x baitcaster reel same line and leader rigged on a same series st croix rods except its a baicasting rod instead of spinning but when you talked about drag just like I said before in that my views are BOTH the rod and reel are equally important because they both work in tandem because I know you can’t argue that if you have either or in a scrappy system being either a cheap reel or rod the chances of one landing a good fish is pretty nill besides good quality both reels and rods that are made for saltwater are able to stand up to corrosion resistance that a cheap reel or rod can’t guides can become rusted on cheap rods and reels can become non working if not cared for like they need to be Inow don’t get me wrong because I also know one doesn’t have to spend a ton of unnecessary amounts of money to still be able to purchase quality tackle but I never skimp on quality and over the years of experience i now have I know what has worked for me for over 2 decades now so I stick with what works for ME what others use is there buissness and as far as lures especially in winter where fish are picky I try and think like a fish persay think about it if you were a fish and your cold would you want to eat something big then be even more miserable trying to digest something and still be able to stay reasonably warm? If it was me I would go for the smaller meal something easy to chase so I could concentrate on other things like seeking warmer water anyways I know you get my meaning thanks for the info and as usual all you guys do🤔😉👍
As you reference a good drag is very important. Could you do a video on how to properly clean, lubricant & adjust the drag setting. Thks Ron: salt strong parner
Hey Ron! Here is a video I did on cleaning the drag:

Great video. I never thought of the drag like I’ll explained.
Great Info ! I bought a couple of your travel rods and was wondering if you recommend waxing the ferules before putting the rods together ? similar to fly rods, I did not the first time I put them together and one of the rods was tough to take apart. Thanks again for all your time and information you guys share !
Great video. What would you recommend for a rod with performance and price between the Slam Stick and Slot Machine?
thanks
I can’t think of any because we price these rods much less than production rods since we go direct to the manufacture while the traditional rod companies have to add overhead costs into pricing for distributors and retailers (most often over 50% in total).
So any rod that has better performance than the Slam Stick is typically priced at or above the Slot Machine.
Awesome video and thanks. I will definitely be checking out better rods and paying more attention to the drag on the reels !! Thanks again and Tight Lines!! 🎣🎣🎣
