Top 3 Live Bait Mistakes for Trophy Fish with Capt Peter Deeks
- By: Luke Simonds

Most anglers think live bait is the “big fish easy button.”
Hook it… toss it out… wait.
That works… until it doesn’t.
Because when you’re targeting trophy fish, the rules completely change… and what looks right is often exactly what’s costing you bites.
In this lesson from the Live Bait Mastery Course, Capt. Peter Deeks breaks down three mistakes that ruin your chances at big fish… even when everything else feels dialed in.
See the 3 live bait mistakes that are costing you big fish below!
If you’re a VIP Member or already own the Live Bait Mastery course, dive into the full course here.

Key Takeaways:
- Most anglers fish live bait passively… but trophy fish require a much more active approach
- If your bait doesn’t look completely natural, big fish won’t commit
- Matching your gear to the bait, not the fish, is what actually gets bites
- Bigger fish aren’t looking for easy snacks… they’re looking for big, high-value meals
- A few healthy, well-presented baits will outperform a full livewell of weak ones
Final Thoughts
This is one of those lessons that flips a switch.
Because it’s not about using live bait… it’s about how you fish it.
And once you see the difference… you can’t unsee it.
If you’ve ever wondered why you’re getting fewer bites than you should… this might be the reason.

Great video and advice. Something to take into consideration and put it to practice.
I would like more detail of each one of the three mistakes. It would be great to see a video that shows the right way to fish for trophy fish. By that I mean I would like to see how things fit together from the rod to the rig to the bait. I have used some of these tips to catch lowly whiting. I do like to be an active fisherman.
I recommend trying the full course because it offers more details about each mistake along with many more important essentials for catching trophy fish.
Note: If you somehow don’t believe it’s worth more than what you paid, just let customer service know, and you’ll get a full refund of what you paid for the course.

Thanks, Capt Deeks!????????????????
These are some awesome tips on how to properly use live bait. I’ve not been extremely successful with using live bait in the past but after watching this video, it appears that I was making all 3 mistakes! Next time I do use live bait, I’ll keep these in mind! Thanks for the help!
Trophy fish are like lions, and lions eat big animals.
To catch a trophy-sized fish requires trophy-sized baits.
BUT ELEPHANTS EAT PEANUTS! LOL
