My New Favorite Plug For Big Seatrout In The Spring [Retrieve Tips]
- By: Luke Simonds
- on
Spring is one of the best seasons to find big seatrout in shallow water, making for some great shots at trophies for inshore saltwater fishermen.
But these fish can oftentimes be very tough to get to strike because they are quick to turn away if they see or feel something that isn’t natural.
So lure selection and retrieve tactics are what most often separate those who catch many big trout from those who never seem to catch the big ones.
The video below shows a suspending twitch lure along with a specific retrieve that has proven to be extremely good at catching big trout (plus nice redfish) even on calm days when they are toughest to fool.

Final Thoughts
This is an excellent season for catching trophy seatrout, so make sure to devote some time targeting mullet schools along shallow flats.
These trout often hunt alone, so the fishermen who are good at using lures to trigger strikes from the big trout are the ones who catch the most, since they can cover so much more water.
If you haven’t yet tried the Flea Flicker lure, make sure to take advantage of the 50% coupon code (fleaflicker) for your first one at FishStrong.com.

Curious about where you were fishing. West coast?
This was filmed in Tampa Bay
I see you have to fish alone !!!!
Is that by choice ???
Yes, it’s tough to keep track of testing details when someone else is on the boat.
It doesn’t get any better than that!
I wish the big trout were always holding on the flats in such large groups all year long… it’s making me fish every possible chance I can in the Spring to enjoy it while it lasts.
Amazing trout Luke! Good job!
Thanks Gary!
Fantastic lure with a totally different action.ive used it for months in all conditions ,I try it every time I go,it is also my no1 go to lure!!!
Thanks for sharing your results Michael.
I caught an 18″ Speckled Sea Trout yesterday morning, in my kayak, on the Flea Flicker. First time that I used it. Can’t keep them but can’t keep them from biting either. It happily swan away after a nice battle.
Nice work!!!
In Virginia it was just announced that speckled trout during this spawning season, April 1 through June are off limits. This is due to our harsh winters.
Sorry to see that they are off limits. That’s at least a good way to ensure the trout population recovers.
That was a lot of great fish! I’ve got at least two or three Flea Flickers in the tackle box and can’t wait to put them to use. Thanks for the retrieval tips! – Wes
I have one and have not tried it yet. This will motivate me to try it this weekend…if the wind stops howling here 🙂
Our pleasure. Thanks for making time to post the nice comment.
