I drove an hour to fish a canal system, only to hit a dead end: a bridge I couldn’t get under with my paddleboard.
So my entire plan was a complete bust before I even made a cast.
That’s when Smart Fishing Spots came into play. By pulling up the oyster bed layer, I quickly put together a quick Plan B that resulting in some fun action.
Watch the full breakdown below to see how I used the app to turn a busted trip into a solid morning of action:
Software Used:
Tackle Used:
- Rod: Slot Machine Rod – Medium
- Reel: Otis 2500
- Mainline: J-Braid 8 Grand – 10 lb
- Leader: 15 lb mono with 30 lb mono bite tippet
- Lure: Skinny Lipper Jr – Mullet
Key Takeaways
- Oyster bars = prime fall feeding zones
- Don’t waste time on “dead water, if there’s no bait, move!
- Smart Fishing Spots shows structure, tides, and weather all in one place
- Uploading catch photos auto-logs tide, weather, and location (huge time-saver)
- Even when Plan A fails, you can always find fish with a Plan B
Conclusion
What started as a frustrating morning with Plan A shut down by a blocked canal turned into a fun, productive trip thanks to Smart Fishing Spots. By quickly pivoting to oyster bars, I found trout right away, logged my catches with ease, and even picked off a redfish before heading in. No, they weren’t giants, but it was proof once again that having the right tools can make all the difference.

Thanks Luke can’t wait
Just learned about fish log. Game changer! My dad and I have been taking crappy notes for years. Not sure dad knows the pen or computer is a thing that was invented so no way a smart phone app. I’m in!
We’re glad to see that you are enjoying the catch log feature…. it sure is more ch better and easier than the manual pen to paper method.
You end up with the day not being a total loss …. Although small the Sea Trout were beautiful fish nonetheless… good job and well done Luke ….
Yes, I was very pleased to have at least had some action that morning. And very close to some good drag pulling fish like the snook and the mystery fish that waked behind my lure but didn’t fully commit.
I guess if it was me I would of tryed driving to the bridge by either car truck or boat before my fishing trip to see if a plan for fishing it could of been achieved
That area is an hour drive away, so a pre check of the bridge was not feasible… nor did I even consider it because I have never experienced a bridge that I couldn’t get under while on a paddleboard.
I figured you would of seen that bridge on your pre trip planning it must of been an extremely low bridge if you couldn’t get a paddleboard underneath it!
Yes, it was a very low bridge that I surely could have made it under at a low tide. But the water was very high during this trip.
Awesome video and advice
Thanks Eduardo!
Great presentation Luke…very helpful.
Thanks Jim!
Good stuff
Thanks David!
Very helpful
Thanks Bubba!
Watching your seemingly effortless casts land inches from the mangrove branches early in the video I decided you must never miss, then you proved me wrong. After watching the video to the end, you proved your misses are VERY few and far between and super accurate (especially the cast between the branch and the dock piling. What was your room for error there, 2′-3′ from 75′-100′ away?). It would be cool if you guys had shot tracer tech like TV golf so we could see where you are trying to specifically land the lure in different scenarios. You all do a good job of explaining it, but a lot of times its hard to see just where the lure splashes.
Thanks for the nice comment Nathan! I wish I c you’d say that my casts are always on point. I hit the bushes many times that trip, but only had to manually get the lure once since the inline hooks lower the odds of snagging branches compared to trebles.
That sure would be cool to get a lure tracer system established.
