Finicky Summer Redfish? My Go-To Simple Lure In Calm, Shallow Water

Redfish can be weird.
They’ll explode on bait ten feet away, then develop trust issues the second you try to catch them.
Luckily, a few small adjustments can be all it takes to get them to commit.
When it’s calm and they’re shallow, spooky, and allergic to commitment, I reach for the Polk County Tweaker.
It doesn’t make a scene.
It just hangs around looking easy to eat.
I created this video to show you how I work the Tweaker for shallow, spooky redfish.
And break down two simple retrieves, including one you probably wouldn’t think would work.
Featured Gear:
- Lure: Polk County Tweaker
- Rigging 1: 3/0 Hoss Helix Hook Weightless
- Rigging 2: 3/0 Hoss Helix Hook 1/8 oz
- Rigging 3: 2/0 Hoss Round Eye Jighead 1/4 oz
Great Lure For Spooky Summer Redfish?
A subtle soft-plastic jerk lure like the Polk County Tweaker is an excellent option when redfish are holding in shallow, calm water.
These fish often don’t want to chase a fast-moving lure during the hottest part of summer.
The Tweaker can be worked with very little movement, allowing it to remain in the strike zone and look like an easy meal.
Its slim profile also creates less commotion than a lure with a hard-thumping tail, which can be important when targeting pressured or spooky fish.
How Should You Retrieve A Lure For Finicky Redfish?
Start with two light twitches followed by a pause.
Cast beyond the feeding activity, allow the Tweaker to settle to the desired depth, and then use the following retrieve:
- Give the lure two subtle twitches.
- Let it pause.
- Repeat the sequence slowly.
- Increase your speed only if the fish are feeding aggressively.
Avoid making the twitches too sharp.
Hot water and calm conditions can make redfish hesitant to chase. An aggressive retrieve may create more action than they want and cause them to turn away.
If the grass is topped out and the bait is holding near the surface, rig the lure weightless to keep it above the vegetation.
A Slow Retrieve Can Catch Extra-Spooky Redfish
Sometimes even subtle twitches are too aggressive.
If the fish continue refusing the lure, let it settle to the desired depth and begin reeling it slowly.
Don’t twitch the rod or try to add any extra action.
In areas without heavy grass, allow the lure to make occasional contact with the bottom. This slow-drag presentation creates an easy target that doesn’t appear to be escaping.
It can be especially effective after redfish follow or refuse a traditional twitch-and-pause retrieve.
Should You Rig The Polk County Tweaker Weightless?
A weightless rig works best when redfish are feeding in extremely shallow water or holding above topped-out grass.
Without additional weight, the lure remains higher in the water column and is less likely to collect vegetation.
A weighted hook is a better option when you need additional casting distance or want the Tweaker to run slightly deeper while remaining weedless.
In deeper water without much grass, a jighead allows you to reach the bottom and maintain contact throughout the retrieve.
Cast Ahead Of Feeding Redfish
Even the perfect lure and retrieve won’t produce if the bait never reaches the fish.
Watch and listen for signs of feeding activity, including:
- Bait scattering across the surface
- Redfish pushing water
- Small splashes or boils
- Fish slurping bait
- Activity along the edges of grass
When you see or hear a redfish feeding, react quickly, but avoid landing the lure directly on top of it.
Cast beyond or ahead of the activity and bring the Tweaker through the strike zone.
This gives the redfish an opportunity to discover the lure without being startled by its entry into the water.
Final Thoughts
Tough summer conditions don’t always mean the redfish have stopped feeding.
Sometimes they simply want an easier meal.
Keep your presentation subtle, match the rigging to the depth, and let the fish tell you whether they want a twitch-and-pause retrieve or a slow drag.

I suggestion/request for the Beginners Course. Could you do an episode that includes a short video explaining some of the most common terms including:
Also terms like Tailing. I’m sure there are more.
I’m learning slowly but I’m not always sure if I see what I am supposed to be looking for.
Thank you.
Thanks for the lowdown on the slowdown Pat, the high water temps definitely call for slower presentations in most cases.
Good information. I’ll try it as soon as I get a chance. Again great video.
Have not tried the tweaker but a few times with no luck. Fernandina Beach is all dark water lots of oyster bars and no flats. However I do find that in summer just stopping the bait and letting it sit does get strikes on some days.
I’m going to give the tweaker another few tried
Good Info Pat, thx
Thanks for the tip.
Thank you Pat for another fine set of instructions.
Another great video,Pat. Thank you,sir.🤗🎣🙏💯
Great video, thanks Pat!!!
